Heavy Truck Downtime: How Repairs Impact Your Bottom Line

If your business relies on heavy trucks, it is important to keep fleet downtime to a minimum to maintain high productivity and profits. Whatever the underlying cause for repair, every hour your vehicle spends in the shop, you incur lost revenue, delivery schedule disruptions, and increased repair costs. The American Transportation Research Institute reports that the average cost of heavy truck downtime is over $400 per day.

The key factors that can affect your bottom line include:

    • Lost revenue due to missed deliveries
    • Administrative overhead spent on reschedules
    • Paying driver wages even when they are not on the road

If you have fleet operations, these costs can increase exponentially.

Find out the impact of truck breakdowns on business from repairs.

    1. Reduced Business Productivity

Whenever a heavy truck enters a workshop, your business starts losing hours that could otherwise have been spent on delivering loads. You will be losing hours that could have been spent generating revenue, not spending money on repairs.

While your business faces a loss of productivity, your dispatchers may have to work on reassigning routes. Additionally, your drivers may be sidelined or may have to wait for new assignments. Your existing efficient system can get fragmented, creating workaround solutions or overtime.

    2. Increase in Operational Costs

As mentioned above, heavy truck downtime can cost hundreds of dollars per day per vehicle. Different cost factors can add up, including:

    • Truck repair costs
    • Overtime pays
    • Temporary rentals
    • Towing

Factors like time lost on reschedules and the cost of running behind on routine truck maintenance can further contribute to increased operational costs. While each incident of repair may seem manageable, the costs can accumulate over a span of a year to affect your profits.

    3.  Loss of Revenue

When increased operational costs combine with loss of revenue, the impact of truck breakdowns on business can be significant. Whether a truck is operating on the road or not, you have to continue paying loans or leases, insurance premiums, and ownership costs.

In such situations, a fleet manager is focused on damage control, but the competition is fulfilling contracts and driving repeat business. You will be losing business not just from the current business, but also from potential future orders.

    4. Increased Customer Dissatisfaction

Delays in shipment or unfulfilled promises affect your business’s reputation. Just a single instance of a truck breakdown is often enough to raise doubts in a customer’s mind about whether your business is capable of delivering. Such damage to trust can be hard to recover from.

The key to maintaining customer loyalty is through reliable service. Heavy truck downtime can associate your business’s name with uncertainty.

Proactive Ways to Reduce Heavy Truck Downtime

If you are serious about running a successful business, it is important to take all necessary steps to reduce or eliminate downtime. The following steps can help you in this regard:

    • Create Preventive Maintenance Protocols: This includes scheduled inspections, monthly fluid checks, pre-trip inspections by drivers, annual compliance checks, and weekly undercarriage checks.
    • Create an Emergency Response Policy: A rapid response action plan for breakdowns and accidents can help minimize losses and reduce downtime. This policy can cover towing service contracts, driver safety procedures, replacement vehicle protocols, and customer communication systems.
    • Select the Right Heavy Truck Repair Shop: Build strong partnerships with heavy truck repair shops that provide comprehensive services. These requirements should include heavy-duty equipment and lifts, advanced diagnostic software, frame straightening systems, large truck paint booths, multi-bay capacity, extended service hours, deep parts inventory, and priority scheduling.

Studies suggest that proper preventive maintenance can reduce the frequency of breakdowns by up to 50%. It is recommended to choose a licensed, experienced, and well-established repair shop that can help you maintain your truck or fleet effectively and in a timely manner while handling repairs promptly to help avoid or reduce heavy truck downtime.
