Theater Etiquette: 8 Rules Everyone Should Follow

Etiquettes in a theater may seem common sense, but you would be surprised how many people break these simple rules. So before you head to your next film, make sure to brush up on your theater etiquette!

The etiquette will be different in each theater, so it is best to ask the staff their specific rules. But here are some general tips that will help you enjoy your experience and not annoy those around you!:

    1. Arrive On Time Or Early

This one is a no-brainer, but it is still worth mentioning. Showing up late to a show iis not only inconsiderate to others, but it also ruins the experience for yourself. You miss key plot points and must play catch up for the rest of the show. So do yourself (and everyone else) a favor and arrive on time or, even better, early!

    2. Turn Off Your Phone

This is another rule that seems like common sense but is often broken. Once the lights dim ,ensure your phone is turned off. Step out of the theater until the show starts if you need to use it. But even then, be considerate of those around you and keep your phone on silent mode.

    3. Avoid Talking During The Show

We get it; plays and musicals are meant to be enjoyed with friends and loved ones. But that doesn’t give you a free pass to talk during the show.. Not only is it rude, but it’s also incredibly distracting to those trying to watch. If you must talk, take it outside of the theater.

    4. Don’t Bring Food From Home

Unless you have a medical condition that requires you to eat during the show, try to avoid bringing food from home. The smell of your popcorn or candy can distract those around you. Plus, it’s just messy and inconsiderate. If you get hungry during the show, there’s usually a concession stand where you can buy snacks.

    5. Don’t Bring Outside Drinks

This rule goes hand-in-hand with the one above. Not only is it messy to bring outside drinks into the theater, but it’s also against most theatres’ rules. If you want something to drink during the film, buy it at the concession stand before the show starts.

    6. Respect The Personal Space Of Others

When choosing your seat, be mindful of the personal space of others. If the theater is not crowded, it’s usually best to sit in the middle or towards the back. That way, you’re not blocking anyone’s view and have plenty of space around you.

    7. Be Considerate Of Children

If you are sitting near children, consider their age and maturity level. If they are young, try not to make too much noise or move around too much. You don’t want to distract them from the show or disturb those around you.

    8. Thank The Staff

Last but not least, don’t forget to thank the staff! They are there to ensure you have a good time and do a lot of work to ensure the theater is clean and running smoothly. A simple “thank you” can go a long way.

Now that you know the basics of theater etiquette put them into practice the next time you go to see a film. And don’t forget to thank the staff for their hard work! If you need more information on plays and musicals, browse through Raphael Martin to see more.
